Vietnam is a nation of captivating diversity, from the fertile plains of the Mekong Delta, majestic mountains and natural beauty of Halong Bay. This is a nation rich in culture, tradition and history, the flavours of French Indochina remain and the people have a refreshing warmth and friendliness.
Hanoi’s broad, tree-lined boulevards, beautiful parks, lakes, elegant French villas and colonial-era buildings painted in muted hues of yellow and orange. There are the traditions of French Indochina, commercial bustle, street markets and a unique Old Quarter. It is also known as the ’36 Streets’, with each street is named for what it sells, eg. Silver St, Gold St, Shoe St, Fish St, Tin St, Bamboo St and so on.
Medical Electives in Vietnam
Our medical electives placements are based in a large teaching hospital in Hanoi with a focus on surgery. It is one of the largest surgical centres in Vietnam with more than 1500 beds and 52 operating rooms. A wide range of procedures are undertaken there including neurosurgery, orthopaedics, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, gastroenterology, plastic, paediatric and urology surgery. Emergency surgeries are available 24/7 while laparoscopic and robotic surgeries have also been introduced. This is a great opportunity for those interested in emergency, ICU, surgery, anaesthesiology and imaging diagnostics. It is also possible to split your placement between the surgical specialty and obstetrics. This hospital welcomes medical electives and nursing students as well as medical professionals.
Working hours are generally 7.30 am – 4.30 pm with 1 hour for lunch. Students and volunteers should wear a white coat and bring a stethoscope.
As with all medical electives in Vietnam you will need an open mind, a level of resourcefulness, patience, compassion, good-humour and a flexible attitude to be able to get the most out of your placement.

Surgical hospital in Hanoi
INCLUSIONS:

- Accommodation in a clean, air-conditioned guesthouse in a single/twin room with ensuite bathroom. The guesthouse is well located in the historic quarter of Hanoi and is a short walk to the hospital.

- Lunch, dinner and drinks. There are many cafes nearby serving delicious and affordable food.
- Items of a personal nature (eg telephone, laundry)
- Travel Insurance, Passport fees, Vaccinations
- Hospital Registration Fee of USD60 (payable in cash at the hospital)
- Flights (and taxes) to and from Hanoi, Vietnam
General Travel Information
ARRIVAL & ORIENTATION: You will fly into Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport and then transfer to your guesthouse accommodation.
VIETNAM WEATHER: Vietnam’s climate is tropical and warm all year round. The temperature in Hanoi averages between 19 and 30 °C and tropical rains fall mainly May-September coinciding with the warmer summer months.
STUDENT MEDICAL INDEMNITY: We recommend that you advise your medical indemnity provider of your medical electives in Vietnam in advance of travel.
DEPOSIT: A deposit of A$495 is requested after your placement is confirmed and this deposit is non-refundable. Please proceed to the Volunteer Application Form when you are ready to apply.
FINAL PAYMENT: Final payment is due two months prior to departure.
TRAVEL INSURANCE: It is a condition of your travel arrangements that you have current travel insurance to cover against cancellation fees, medical expenses, Covid cover, lost luggage and evacuation.
VISAS and PASSPORT: Visas are required for visitors travelling to Vietnam. We will provide further instructions once your placement is confirmed. Please ensure that your passport expires at least 6 months after you return home and that you have some spare blank pages in your passport.
